Traveling With A Pet

If you will be traveling long distances with a pet, make sure the pet is in good health and up-to-date on vaccines, especially the rabies vaccine. A health certificate is required if a pet will be traveling between states or internationally. This is important to obtain if you are flying, and requires an examination by your veterinarian within 10 days of expected travel.

If you leave a pet at home when you travel, it is important to leave good contact information and an up-to-date rabies certificate so that caretakers can call a veterinarian in case of emergency.

When bringing animals to the veterinary hospital, always have dogs on a leash and cats in a carrier, no matter how well-behaved they are. (You do not know how your pet will react to any injuries it may have, or to other animals at the hospital.)
